What could be better than being a kid coming to Rainbow Day Camp? Well nothing beats it but being a Rainbow Day Camp counsellor comes close...
It rarely happens that someone is able to come full circle at Rainbow Day Camp. Kim Barton grew up as a camper, then continued on as an LIT, Volunteer, Junior Counsellor, Inclusion Counsellor and Senior Counsellor.
Kim spent a few years studying in the University of Guelph's Bachelor of Arts and Science program, with a focus on biology and psychology, but has just recently decided to follow her passion of learning about and working with children. She will be transferring into Guelph's Child Youth and Family program, hoping to set herself up for her long-term goals. She is interested in becoming a speech pathologist, occupational therapist or starting a career in social work. For years Kim sang and played guitar as a serious hobby. She spends a lot of time writing her own music, and enjoys performing for local crowds. Her experience working with children outside Rainbow started in babysitting for family friends and volunteering at the CCLC day care. In high school she completed a co-op through Big Brothers Big Sisters, counselling young children in school. She now does some respite and support work for children around the Guelph area, which she has thrived on and proven to her that this is her passion. When asked what she is most looking forward to about this summer, Kim said "being able to share my knowledge the staff, then stepping back to watch them create the friendships and memories with all of Rainbow's campers".
It is my pleasure to introduce you to Logan Bishop, our new Assistant Camp Director. Logan is an Oakville native, but has decided that it is way better to be in Guelph. She graduated from the French immersion program in high school and has played soccer competitively since the age of 8. She is currently in her third year at the University of Guelph studying biomedical science. In her spare time she likes to run, watch documentaries and hunt for new items to add to her collection of cheetah things. Working with children has always been a passion of hers. From teaching swimming, to being a counselor at an overnight camp, she has experience with all kinds of kids in a variety of situations. Last year she worked as a Supporting Kids in Camp worker, but spent the majority of the time at Rainbow. What she is most looking forward to about the summer is being able to play and have fun with the kids and give them a safe environment to foster new friendships.
"The friendships you create over the summer working at Rainbow are unbelievable and the support from all the counselors is incredible. All summer long I felt I could rely on any member of the team for support. Being a role model for campers at Rainbow is awesome! To encourage participation or see a camper build a friendship with another camper is truly remarkable… "
- Shelby, Program Coordinator 2011
"Rainbow is a place where campers, counsellors and parents alike bring the passion and positivity needed to create the perfect camp environment. Campers can successfully learn and play in a safe inclusive environment and take part in stimulating activities that will test their creativity and imagination. I worked for Rainbow for three summers and they were the three best summers of my life. I learned many lessons about the human condition and human dignity that I will hold close to my heart forever. The smiles of all the children that I had the pleasure of meeting are only outnumbered by the lessons that they gave me, the friendships I made and the shoulder rides that I was "politely asked" to give.
The was a great big Moose..."
